Keeping your employees happy is mutually beneficial. Employees that are satisfied with their work are more productive, more loyal, and more successful – leading to greater success for the company. Many SnapSuites members are business owners themselves, and we get to see first hand, how these employers do it, and do it well.

From what we’ve seen, a salary raise is not the only way to please your employees. While it certainly isn’t going to upset an employee, if your budget is tight, there are other ways to show your appreciation.

Here are a few ideas:

1. Positive feedback: Make sure to let your employees know when they’re doing a good job. If you don’t personally tell them, they will constantly be questioning if you are pleased. When we receive positive feedback, we’re actually encouraged to do more work of the same or better quality. If you’re unable to pull someone aside during the workday, sending a quick email during the evening hours will do just as well.

2. Be flexible: If you can’t give an employee more money or more vacation time, try to be more flexible with the hours they need to be in the office. If an employee mentions that their son has a recital at school coming up, offer that they go and see it, despite the fact that it’s during the work day. Offer employees, who are able to, to work for home. They will really appreciate you prioritizing their needs.

3. Buy lunch or bring in snacks: Bringing an employee that you noticed working really hard out to lunch can be incredibly flattering. Not only will they be excited for the meal itself, but they’ll feel privileged to have one on one time with a superior. If you notice a specific team or department thriving, bring in coffee and donuts. These are little gestures that can go a long way.

cathryn-lavery-67852 (1)4. Have open conversations: If your company is at a point where they want to provide more to an employee, but cannot, tell them. They will appreciate the honestly and it will help them to understand the situation more fully. Give them an idea of when they may see rewards so they have something to look forward to.

5. Ask for ideas: Your employees probably have a lot to say about the company. I am sure they probably have reasons why they love it, reasons why they hate it, but they probably also have some ideas as to how it can improve. These ideas would be great for you to hear and employees will feel more valued when you ask. If you don’t ask your employees what they’re thinking, you may miss out on a great idea that could bring your company or department to the next level.
